My name is Devon West and I've had piano keys under my fingers since I was nine years old.

I started learning gospel piano from my dad - C chord, F chord, G chord, C sharp. That was it. The first time I played in service during feet washing at church, I CRUSHED IT... because they sang "Didn't You Say You Love Jesus" in C sharp - the only key I knew! That one moment boosted my confidence through the roof.

Then reality hit.

I went to the military for eight years, and during that time I played at churches all over the place. Here's the thing - all these churches only had keys and drums. No bass player to save me. And I fell on my face SO MANY TIMES. I'm talking literally embarrassed myself, sitting at that keyboard completely humiliated because I could only play congregation songs comfortably in one or two keys.

I would BLAZE through the worship songs... but the SECOND someone spontaneously started singing a congregation song, I was COOKED. Those changes happen so fast, and I couldn't keep up. You know what I did? I would either act like the keyboard was broken or just sit there frozen while the drummer looked at me like "bro, what are you doing?"

That was my reality for YEARS.

So I did what most struggling pianists do - I turned to YouTube. Spent MONTHS trying to figure it out on my own with no structured approach, just playing the same things I already knew in the same key, wondering why I wasn't getting better. I was investing tremendous amounts of time practicing without a clear plan and getting absolutely nowhere.

Then I got tired of being embarrassed and really started doing things differently. I found mentors like my cousin my Dad, Dewayne Sumler, and later in New Orleans, Ishmael Cotton and Brandon Butler took me under their wings. These guys could REALLY play, and they put me through the ringer. Ishmael told me once, "Don't ask me to help you with anything else until you master what I just showed you." That changed everything.

After about 10 years of trial and error, finding the best ways to practice, and learning from incredible mentors, I went from that embarrassed pianist acting like his keyboard was broken to confidently playing congregation songs Confidently.

Today, I've helped nearly 500 gospel pianists make that same transformation - and I've built a business doing what I love.
